Questions and answers
Short answers to the questions visitors ask most often.
Is Montenegro in the Schengen area?
No. Montenegro is not in Schengen and not in the EU. It has its own visa rules and its own 90/180 count. A Montenegrin visa does not let you enter Schengen countries.
Can I enter Montenegro with a Schengen visa?
Yes, if you hold a valid Schengen, US, UK or Irish visa or residence permit, you can enter without a Montenegrin visa and stay up to 30 days, but not longer than your visa or permit is valid. See the visa check.
Do Russian citizens need a visa for Montenegro?
Yes, from 1 November 2026 citizens of Russia, Belarus, China, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye need a visa. Without a Montenegrin visa you can enter only with a valid Schengen, US, UK or Irish visa or residence permit (up to 30 days).
How long can I stay without a visa?
Citizens of visa-free countries can stay up to 90 days in any 180 days. Some countries have shorter limits. Check your country on the visa check page.
Do I have to register my stay?
Yes. Every foreigner must be registered within 24 hours of arrival. Hotels and licensed hosts do it within 12 hours. If you stay on your own, register at the police or the local tourist organisation. The fine is EUR 60 to 600. See registration of stay.
What is the tourist tax?
A small tax per person per night set by each municipality, usually up to about EUR 1. Hotels add it to the bill; otherwise you pay it when you register.
Where do I apply for a Montenegrin visa?
At a Montenegrin embassy or consulate, or at a VFS Global visa centre in countries where it works. There is no e-visa yet. See visa types.
How much does a visa cost?
The consular fee is EUR 35 for an A, C or D visa. The application itself is free. Children under 14 with their own passport pay half. VFS centres add their own service fee.
Can I extend my stay beyond 90 days?
Not as a tourist. For a longer stay apply for temporary residence before your 90 days end, for example on the grounds of work, a company, family, property or digital nomad status.
What happens if I overstay?
You can get a fine of EUR 200 to 1,200 and an entry ban of 90 days to 5 years.
Can I work with a tourist visa?
No. A visa does not give the right to work. You need a combined residence and work permit.
Does buying property give residence?
Yes, property is a ground for temporary residence. Since 2026 the property must be worth at least EUR 150,000 (EU, EEA and Swiss citizens are exempt from this rule).
Is there a digital nomad visa?
Yes. The law has a digital nomad permit for up to 2 years, extendable by 2 more years, and a D visa for digital nomads. See residence.
