Registration of stay (prijava boravka)

Every foreign visitor must be registered at the place of stay. In a hotel this happens automatically. In a private flat or with friends, check that it is done — the fine is up to EUR 600.

Who must register

The rule applies to every foreigner who stays up to 90 days (with or without a visa) and to holders of a D visa. Citizens of EU countries do not need to register for stays up to 3 months.

Holders of a temporary or permanent residence permit register only when they stay in another town for more than 3 days.

Deadlines

  • Hotel, hostel, licensed private host: the host registers you with the police within 12 hours of arrival. Give them your passport data.
  • Friends, family or a company host you: the host registers you within 12 hours.
  • You stay on your own (for example in a rented flat without a registered host): you register yourself within 24 hours of arrival.
  • You move to another town for more than 24 hours: register again at the new place.

Where to register

At the nearest police station (Uprava policije) with your passport and the address of your accommodation.

If you are a tourist without a registered host, you can register free of charge at the local tourist organisation (turistička organizacija), or at the municipality if there is no tourist organisation. They send the data to the police within 12 hours.

Keep the confirmation slip (often called the "white card", bijeli karton). You may need it at the border, for a visa extension or for a residence application.

Tourist tax

Each municipality sets its own tourist tax (boravišna taksa) per person per night. Reported rates are about EUR 0.10 to 1.00; in Budva, Kotor and Tivat about EUR 1.00 for adults and EUR 0.50 for ages 12 to 18. Children under 12 usually pay nothing.

Hotels add the tax to your bill. Private hosts collect it or you pay it when you register at the tourist organisation. Registration itself is free.

Deregistration

Deregister 24 hours before you leave the place of stay. You do not need to deregister if you leave on the date written in your registration.

A registration without an end date is valid for 6 months or until your 90-day stay ends.
